Expert Deadwooding for Mature Trees

Carlisle Tree Surgeons arranges deadwooding across Carlisle, the Eden Valley and the surrounding towns, carried out by NPTC-qualified, fully insured tree surgery teams.

All trees shed branches naturally, but a mature oak, beech or ash over a lawn, patio or parking space can drop limbs heavy enough to injure someone or damage a car. Deadwooding removes those branches before they fall.

It’s one of the lightest-touch jobs we do — the living crown is left untouched — and it makes a striking difference to how a tree looks. We typically specify removal of deadwood over a given diameter, for example 25mm and above.

What Deadwooding Involves

A climber works through the whole canopy, cutting out dead, diseased and broken branches and any hung-up limbs from previous storms. Cuts are made back to live wood so the tree can seal the wound.

For veteran trees we can leave some standing deadwood in place for wildlife where it poses no risk, and we’ll always discuss that with you first.

When Deadwooding Is Needed

  • Dead branches over targets

Anything that could land on people, cars, sheds or a neighbour’s garden should come out.

  • After storm damage

Snapped and hanging limbs left in the crown are a hazard and an entry point for decay.

  • Ash with dieback

Infected ash sheds brittle dead branches. Deadwooding buys time on trees that are being monitored rather than felled.

Deadwooding: Common Questions

Can deadwood be removed from a protected tree?

Removing dead branches is generally exempt from TPO consent, but in England you must give the council five working days’ notice first unless the work is urgently needed for safety. Check with your council before work starts.

How can I tell if a branch is dead?

In summer, dead branches have no leaves and the bark often peels or has fungus on it. In winter it’s harder to spot, so it’s worth having someone look from within the canopy.
